What is a Vein Center? We Answer the Top Vein FAQs

What is a vein center?

A vein center is a medical center dedicated solely to the diagnosis and treatment of vein conditions, such as spider veins, varicose veins, and venous insufficiency. Vein centers are generally led by phlebologists, also known as vein doctors, with specialized training in vascular imaging and minimally invasive vein treatments. If you have spider veins, varicose veins, or other symptoms of vein disease, please schedule an appointment at our center for vein treatment in Manhattan, NYC.

What do they do at a vein clinic?

Vein clinics are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of vein conditions. As such, when you visit vein doctors, they generally examine your leg veins, discuss your symptoms to determine if you have vein disease, and perform ultrasound diagnostic tests. Based on their assessment and diagnosis, they curate a personalized vein treatment plan to address the root cause of your vein problems and remove the superficial varicose veins and spider veins.

What is a Vein Center

Do I need a vein specialist?

You need a vein specialist if you have the signs and symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency, the root cause of most vein problems. Venous insufficiency is a medical condition wherein your vein valves — generally responsible for effective blood circulation to the heart — collapse or malfunction. When your vein valves collapse, blood flows backward and accumulates in the leg veins, eventually leading to spider veins and varicose veins.

The earliest signs and symptoms of vein disease include leg heaviness, restless leg syndrome, frequent leg cramps, leg swelling, and skin discoloration. If you notice these symptoms, please contact your vein specialist in NYC as soon as possible. You should also consult your vein specialist if you notice spider veins, varicose veins, or the advanced complications of vein disease, such as leg ulcers and deep vein thrombosis.

Do dermatologists treat varicose veins?

Dermatology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions. Varicose veins, as mentioned previously, are caused by a circulatory disorder known as chronic venous insufficiency. As such, dermatologists often provide varicose veins treatments, but they focus primarily on cosmetic relief — they use laser therapy or sclerotherapy to remove superficial varicose veins and spider veins, improving your leg’s appearance. But since they don’t address the root cause of varicose veins, there’s a high risk of recurrence.

When should I be concerned about varicose veins?

The presence of varicose veins is indicative of advanced venous insufficiency — you’ve probably had vein disease long enough for a large volume of blood to accumulate in your leg veins. As such, you should contact a vein specialist in NYC without delay — the longer you delay, the higher the risk of advanced complications. Furthermore, if your varicose veins continue expanding due to blood accumulation, you may eventually experience a varicose vein rupture, leading to profuse bleeding. At that stage, you have to be taken to a hospital.

What happens if varicose veins are left untreated?

If varicose veins are left untreated, you have a high risk of advanced complications. The lack of effective blood circulation leads to skin discoloration and the formation of non-healing wounds (ulcers). Furthermore, the breakdown of blood cells leads to the formation of rust-colored and leathery patches on your skin. You may also develop blood clots in leg veins (deep vein thrombosis) that can break away and travel to your lungs, leading to a potentially fatal pulmonary embolism.

Is walking good for varicose veins?

Walking is good for overall blood circulation, physical health, and vascular health. If you walk frequently or engage in other cardiovascular exercises, your calf muscles push the accumulated blood in your leg veins to your heart. As such, walking significantly alleviates the symptoms of vein disease and varicose veins, making you feel better. However, walking can only provide temporary relief from the worst symptoms of vein disease — it’s not a solution to varicose veins or vein disease.

Does drinking water help varicose veins?

Drinking water improves your general vascular health. It improves blood circulation and strengthens the vein walls, thereby minimizing the risk of vein disease. However, if you already have varicose veins, water won’t fix the diseased vein valves. As such, drinking water is good for everyone, but it’s not a substitute for minimally invasive varicose vein treatments. Please contact your vein doctors in NYC to explore your vein treatment options.

Are compression socks good for varicose veins?

Compression socks are skin-tight garments that apply pressure on your leg veins, thus pushing the accumulated blood towards the heart. They also prevent blood from accumulating in the leg veins because of gravity. As such, compression socks can alleviate the worst symptoms of varicose veins, but they can’t treat the root cause — chronic venous insufficiency. Please contact your vein doctors in NYC to receive correctly sized compression socks — wearing ill-fitting compression socks won’t provide any benefit.

Do varicose veins go away?

Varicose veins can’t go away on their own because they’re caused by damaged vein valves and the accumulation of blood in leg veins. If you don’t seek varicose vein treatment, blood will continue accumulating in your leg veins, leading to excessive vascular dilation and a high risk of varicose vein ruptures. If you have varicose veins, please contact your nearest center for vein treatment in NYC.

How can I stop varicose veins from getting worse?

  • Wear compression stockings to prevent blood accumulation in leg veins.
  • Engage in cardiovascular exercises that activate your calf muscles — running, swimming, etc.
  • Elevate your legs above your heart’s level while sitting down.
  • Take short walking breaks after every 30 minutes if you have a desk job.
  • Consult reliable vein treatment centers in NYC to explore your vein treatment options.
